Great comment on practicing from Prince

Great Comment!

I get some really thoughtful and insightful comments on this blog. But the only people to see them are me, and maybe someone else who comments on the same post. When I see a great comment, like the one below, I will post it to share with all.

A Twitter friend, Prince wrote this comment on the Musician Practice Journals:

I practiced ...

Me, being a hip hop artist who listens to a lot of NPR Classical, I see where practice everyday, even for minutes can excel your skill ... and being that nowadays I feel like time is slipping away, I find myself writing more, trying out new patterns, styles, and concepts .

I also read a few things on writer's block, which I chronically suffer from at times, lol .. it spoke of practicing, practicing and practicing ..

I experience discomfort only when it didn't come out the way it sounded in my head, and that comes only from rushing or not practicing, honestly, because if it can be thought, it can be brought (to life).

What a wonderful thing to say! It IS true. For years, I could hear what I wanted to play, but didn't have the chops to make it work. Then, at age 28, I finally found a teacher who taught the MUSIC, the SOUND, the stuff inside the music, what's behind the notes. We never worked on scales, Hanon, or any of that.

Amazingly, the inside of my head and the sound outside were able to meet. When that doesn't happen sometimes, it means more practice is needed, or a different approach.

    Thanks for this post!
